WHAT IS IT?
The TransWarp GS is an "Accelerator" card for the Apple IIGS. Put simply, when you plug in the card, your GS runs 2-1/2 times faster than it ever has before.
DOES IT WORK?
I work at my GS for eight or more hours a day. I run all sorts of applications (and games) from the latest software releases (Claris' AppleWorks GS, 1.0 V2, for instance) to hoary old classics like the Apple Mechanic from Beagle Brothers. In the month I had the TransWarp installed I didn't find a single piece of software that wouldn't run.
IS IT ADDICTIVE?
The card Applied Engineering sent us was a review copy--not a keeper. Eventually, I had to rip it out and send it back. My first reaction when I booted my de-Warped system was:
AAGH! THIS IS TERRIBLE! AAAGH!
If Jay doesn't requisition us some TransWarps we can keep, he's fixin' to pay a long visit to the bottom of Bayou Pierre.
INSTALLATION
Installing a TransWarp card is simple. You unplug the GS's CPU chip and plug the TransWarp into the CPU's socket and slot 3. Be careful not to bend any pins on the CPU chip when you pull it out or on the socket connector when you insert it. And store your original CPU chip in a piece of anti-static foam--if your TransWarp ever fails, you'll need the original CPU to use your computer while the card is in the shop.
WHAT'S THE SPEED?
The TransWarp lets you choose three processor speeds: 7 Megahertz, 2.8 Megahertz, and 1 Megahertz.
You can set the speeds via the TransWarp GS Desk Accessory which you access by pressing [CONTROL]-[OPEN-APPLE]-[ESC]. You CAN, but you WON'T. I only took my GS off the 7 Meg speed when I wanted to see what all the poor, deprived users with 1 Meg CPU's had to put up with.
HOW WELL DO PROGRAMS PERFORM?
If your time is valuable and you're waiting on a program that says it's "sorting" or "thinking", you need a TransWarp. If you use AppleWorks, the Print Shop, or anything written in BASIC, you'll revel in the improved speed. 7 Meg still isn't fast enough to suit me (I think 20 Meg would do it), but the TransWarp makes 2.8 Meg (which I USED to think was fast) look pathetic.
HOW'S THE SPEED FEEL?
Running a II+ is like driving a motorcycle 20 MPH. Nice, but no thrill, and it takes forever to get where you're going. Running a GS at 2.8 Meg is like driving a motorcycle 55 MPH. There's a certain visceral thrill involved, and you get where you're headed reasonably soon. Running with a TransWarp at 7 Meg is like driving a motorcycle 140 MPH. Pure heart-wrenching excitement, and you get where you're headed NOW!
USE CARE WHEN YOU OPEN YOUR GS
In our eagerness to test the TransWarp card we got careless and destroyed our 2-meg card. We want to be absolutely clear here: the failure was NOT caused by the TransWarp card, nor by its installation procedure. In our hurry, we reassembled the GS in such a way that the case shorted out our memory card. Your computer is at greatest risk when you're working on the hardware, so use care, OK?
